Thrilled to be presenting the 3 colour screen print au Japon 3’ in the

INTERNATIONAL ORIGINAL PRINT EXHIBITION Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers Bankside Gallery, London 7-17 November, 2024

Exhibition Introduction

by Gill Saunders,

Honorary Senior Research Fellow (and formerly Senior Curator of Prints), Victoria & Albert Museum

We live now surrounded by print - most of it mass-produced, impersonal, without texture or affect, it is the ubiquitous visual scaffolding to our daily lives. But despite this, printmaking persists as one of the most engaging and dynamic of the visual arts.

Getting hands-on with acids and inks, screens and solvents, metal, wood, lino and stone, artists continue to find an almost infinite choice of materials and methods to motivate and shape new work.

This year's exhibition offers a cornucopia of sensation and emotion: wonder, surprise, laughter, anger, mystery, magic. The moods range from the elegiac and wistful to the celebratory and the satirical. Familiar scenes and subjects are made fresh, new perspectives jolt expectations.

Here is print doing what it does so well - delighting, informing, moving, inventing, amplifying or whispering - as the artists skilfully exploit the effects unique to their chosen processes. With artists applying from New Zealand, USA, Canada, Japan, Kenya, Norway, Sweden, Italy, France, Serbia, Iceland, and Poland, as well as the UK and Ireland, the competition is truly international and reflects the flourishing state of printmaking worldwide.

Looking forward to viewing all the amazing works by a phenomenal group of international contemporary printmakers. Hope to see you there!

“In Painting and Printmaking, students have been grappling with current global issues, subverted fantasy stories and archetypal cultural tropes. Eerily yet undeniably relevant, Liz McNeill's paintings portray abstracted compositions of congestion, dissipation, and fragmented figurative elements that emerge from layers of oil, acrylic and gouache, implying something brutal and bodily. While encouraging viewers to derive their own interpretations and meanings from her works, she also addresses a central concept of moral injury, rooted in her own experiences as a cardiologist during the pandemic and AIDS crisis. This perspective informs her search for release in the present, as she addresses suffering in Gaza and considers more broadly where organisations intended to provide care often lack the necessary support from the very structures in which they operate.”
