Liz McNeill is a multimedia contemporary artist based in Scotland. She is a recent graduate in Painting and Printmaking at the Glasgow School of Art (2020-2024).
In her ongoing practice she pursues the potential of painterly abstraction to expand individual expressionism in her work. Liz employs varying degrees of figuration which simultaneously conjure and elude interpretation. Scale and mark making, and their relationship to the body, are fundamental to her longstanding exploration of movement, line and spatial tension. Recent paintings, made in series, embrace the raw physicality of gesture and create a sense of depth, balance and extended narrative through the use of negative space and embedded cellular and anatomical motifs.
Her current material investigations explore the concept of moral injury (informed by her career as a cardiologist). She uses repeated cycles of painting, re-sensitisation, additions and deletions and modulated layering in the generation of her large scale stone lithographs and screen prints. Overload and resultant ‘professional erosion’ is alluded to in the surface properties of her paintings and print works which reveal cracked and reconstituted segments created by complex layering of pigments; immersion and wash out in ink baths; and bleaching and dispersal effects of acid on stone and paper.
